How to Growing Snowdrops in Your Garden Successfully
Snowdrop, also known as Galanthus, is a flowering plant that belongs to the family Amaryllidaceae. Snowdrop has over 20 species which is suitable to be grown in the garden. Each snowdrop variety differs in size, shape, and markings. Snowdrop is often mistaken for the snowflake variety of Leucojum and Acis species. Snowdrop is propagated by division of the clump or reusing the bulb when the plants are dormant.
Some of the most popular snowdrop species include Galanthus nivalis, Galanthus licatus, Galantus elwesii, and Galanthus reginae-olgae. Galanthus nivalis, also known as common snowdrop can reach a height of 7 – 15 cm tall.
Galanthus plicatus, also known as Crimean snowdrop can reach a height of 30 cm in height. Crimean snowdrop usually flowers between in January or March. Galanthus elwesii, also known as giant snowdrop can reach up to a height of 23 cm. Giant snowdrop usually produce blossoms during the January or February. Galanthus reginae looks very much like the G. nivalis but it produce blossoms during the autumn before the green leaves grow on the stem. Most snowdrop plants will produce flowers during the winter.
Before growing snowdrops, you must choose a planting site. The snowdrops plant do well in zones 3 – 9. The soil must be well drained so that the water can easily seep through in the ground. Well drained soil prevent water clogging which will cause the roots of the snowdrop to rot. Snowdrop prefers site that is exposed to partial shade of sunlight. For this reason, you can plant the snowdrop near the shrubs or small trees so that they can provide some sort of shades.
The snowdrop plants must be grown in small groups. You are to space the plant 3 inches apart. The depth of the planting hole should be 3 inches deep. You should not plant snowdrops in a pot because they are likely to wither.
You should move the snowdrop plants if the nearby plants are running their roots over them. If the bulb is freshly lifted, you can plant them as dormant bulb in the autumn. If the bulb is transferred during the spring after the blossoming season, you can plant them as growing bulbs. During the summer, you should water the plants daily. If you want to fertilize the plants, you should do it before the plant begins its new growth.
After flowering, you must keep the established clumps to promote healthy growth. Snowdrops can survive for a long time if they are dug up and divided immediately after the first bloom.
If you own a rock garden, you can use snowdrops as a border plants around the higher flowers such as sunflowers. However, you should not plant too many of them as it will make the bed become crowded.
Snowdrop will create a blanket of beautiful flowers for your garden in spring. During the flowering season, you can cut some snowdrops and bring them into your home to put in the vase. The snowdrop will produce a light honey fragrance in the house.
